Example: AutoCAD imports CSV. This example shows how to Import a CSV file into AutoCAD. We will import a set of hydrants from two different CSV files into a drawing of a city. First, we will use a simple XYZ coordinate CSV file and AutoCAD Points. Import point data from an ASCII (text) file or a Microsoft® Access.mdb file into a drawing. Importing points, such as survey point data collected by a data collector, is a quick and effective way to place points into a drawing. Before you import points, you must create a point file format that describes the layout of the point data in the point data file.

This technical pagedescribes howto Import points intoAutoCAD. Point features in spatial data systems may represent different types ofelements from the realworld. These elements may be real objects (hydrants, containers, streetlights, etc.) or fictitious points (milestones, locations, addresses, etc.)
Most file formats andspatial serversinclude in some way the possibility to storeinformation aboutPoints. Some of them can only save basic data, such as the Point coordinates andslightly more data in the ASCIICSV standard formats, but mostsystems include information, usually alphanumeric data, associatedwiththe Points
Common containers to store Points features
- Causes: Note: Although it is possible to import and handle point data in AutoCAD, if the goal is to have points with attributes, such as comment, piont number/name, etc., the program Autodesk® AutoCAD® Civil 3D® should be used.
- Spatial Manager™ for AutoCAD includes many powerful “AutoCAD Import Points” data providers to import points into AutoCAD. The providers allow you to access the most usual file formats and spatial data servers in which you can find spatial Point data Importing Points into AutoCAD – Selecting the source (and the data provider).
Asalready stated, there are many spatial systemsto store Points information, butinthe following listyou can find some ofthe most common:
· Point ESRI Shape files (SHP)
· Google Earth files (KML/KMZ)
· GPS exchange format files (GPX)
· ASCII text files (CSV, TXT, XYZ, UPT, etc.) – data limited
· MSExcel files (XLS)
· MS Access files (MDB)
· PostGIS databases
· MS SQL Server Spatial databasesSignal Points of a city stored in a KML file

Point features to CAD
CAD applications users often need to import Point features into their drawings, and the content of the data usually comes from very diverse sources: GPS generic data, surveying data, etc.
AutoCAD, being one of the popular applications in the CAD market, only allowsimporting pointsfromother CAD or MCAD applications, but leaves outall the common formats and data servers to handlespatial data
Import Points into AutoCAD
Spatial Manager™ for AutoCAD includes many powerful “AutoCAD Import Points” data providers to import points into AutoCAD. The providers allow you to access the most usual file formats and spatial data servers in whichyou can find spatial Point data Importing Points into AutoCAD – Selecting the source (and the data provider)
When importing the Points, you can choose between AutoCAD Point objects or Block references as imported objects, and many other interesting drawing options through the import process
You can also perform a coordinate transformation “on the fly” when importing the Points. The coordinate transformation is an important issue to consider in Spatial Manager™ for AutoCAD when importing Points because a lot of coordinate data comes from GPS devices or similar. Thus the coordinate data is formatted using Latitude and Longitude values and the users uusually need to import the data usually to projected coordinates in the DWG drawing
Example: AutoCAD imports Points
This example shows how to Import from different Point sources (KML, SHP, OSM – OpenStreetMap – and GPX) into AutoCAD. We will import a set of Point features into a drawing of a city, using AutoCAD Block References including Attributes to catch various alphanumeric data
Issue:
You have a list of point coordinates as ASCII text and you wonder how to import the file or coordinates into Autodesk® AutoCAD®.Causes:
Note: Although it is possible to import and handle point data in AutoCAD, if the goal is to have points with attributes, such as comment, piont number/name, etc., the program Autodesk® AutoCAD® Civil 3D® should be used.Solution:
In AutoCAD you have several possibilities to insert the points, for example:- In the Command line type '3DP' (3DPOLY). From the ACII text file copy all X,Y,Z points in the desired order and paste these into the command line
- Create a script file (.scr) of the point file and drag and drop it into the AutoCAD model view window. Sample script file is attached.
